Mental Health Care Covered by Medicare

SCHEDULE A FREE CONSULTATION

We believe that mental health is health,  especially as we age. That's why we’re proud to accept Medicare and make high-quality mental health care accessible for individuals 65 and older.

Mental well-being is just as important as physical health. As life changes with age, many seniors experience unique emotional challenges, such as depression, anxiety, grief, or cognitive changes. It’s essential to have the right support in place.

On this page, we’ll explain how Medicare helps cover mental health services like psychiatry, telepsychiatry, TMS therapy, and Spravato treatments. We’ll also walk you through how to check your benefits and make the most of your coverage.

Medicare and Mental Health: What You Should Know

Medicare provides important benefits for mental health care, helping older adults maintain a better quality of life and emotional well-being. At the North Carolina Institute of Advanced NeuroHealth, we work directly with Medicare to ensure our patients can access the services they need with peace of mind.

Medicare typically covers a range of mental health services, but your exact coverage may depend on whether you have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), a Medicare Advantage plan, or additional supplemental coverage.

Mental Health Services Medicare May Cover

As people age, staying proactive about mental health becomes even more critical. The good news is that Medicare covers many evidence-based treatments that can help you feel your best. Some of the services we offer that may be covered include:

Medication Management

Finding the right medication (and adjusting it when needed) is a key part of managing mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. Our providers create personalized medication plans to support your overall well-being.

Telepsychiatry (Virtual Appointments)

Getting care should never be a burden. Telepsychiatry allows you to meet with one of our licensed mental health professionals through a secure video call from the comfort of your home. This is a convenient option, especially for those with mobility or transportation concerns.

Spravato for Treatment-Resistant Depression

If traditional medications haven't been effective, Spravato (esketamine) may offer hope. Spravato is an innovative nasal spray treatment approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression. It is administered and monitored in our office to ensure safety and results.

TMS Therapy (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)

TMS therapy uses magnetic pulses to stimulate brain regions involved in mood regulation. It’s a non-invasive option for individuals struggling with depression who haven't found relief from medications. TMS can be a life-changing alternative with minimal side effects.

How to Check Your Medicare Mental Health Benefits

Understanding what your Medicare plan covers can seem complicated, but we’re here to help. You can start by reviewing your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) or logging into your Medicare account online. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, check with your insurance provider for a detailed explanation of mental health benefits.

If you have any questions, our team is happy to assist you with insurance verification and help you understand your options.

Common Questions About Medicare and Mental Health Care

Does Medicare cover visits to psychiatrists or therapists?

Yes, Medicare Part B typically covers outpatient mental health services, including visits with psychiatrists, psychologists, and licensed clinical social workers.

Is a referral required to see a mental health provider?

With Original Medicare, you usually do not need a referral to see a mental health provider. However, if you have a Medicare Advantage plan, referral requirements can vary. Checking your plan details can clarify this.

What costs should I expect?

Under Original Medicare, after meeting your deductible, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for outpatient services. If you have supplemental insurance, it may help cover these costs. Medicare Advantage plans might have different copay structures, so it's important to review your plan benefits.

Can the North Carolina Institute of Advanced NeuroHealth help me verify my Medicare coverage?

Absolutely! We understand that navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming. Our team is here to verify your benefits, explain your coverage, and guide you toward the right care — without added stress. Call us today at

Ketamine Treatment AND Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

These two treatments have risen to show their effectiveness over recent years, and literature is showing them to be among the most effective treatments for many psychiatric disorders.

Ketamine has shown itself to be particularly effective with treatment-resistant depression or TRD, post-traumatic-stress-disorder or PTSD, social anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Provided in a series of infusions, or oral or nasal spray, ketamine brings a dramatic difference the first infusion in some, but more often the change is experienced during and after the third, fourth, or fifth infusion.

TMS is a non-medication and non-invasive treatment that requires placement of a magnetic coil over the left dorsolateral prefontal cortex daily for about 20 minutes at a time. This continues daily for about 30-45 days. But you can begin to experience a real difference in 14 days. TMS can be effective in treatment resistant depression and other mood disorders.

MEET DR. RESHMI SARANGA

Leads the Ketamine Department

"I’m Dr. Reshmi Saranga, President and Owner of North Carolina Interventional Neurotherapy, and I can help you experience freedom from overwhelming emotions that make your life difficult to enjoy. My heart aches for what you go through, and I’ll show you the same compassionate and attention care I show my own family.

I’m board-certified in adult and geriatric psychiatry. After initial training in India, I completed a four year residency at University of Kansas Medical Center, then completed a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center.

I’ve served in the capacity of Chief Resident and on the Committee on Residency and Fellowship with the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology.

You need a psychiatrist who has the education, experiences, and expertise to provide the very best, up-to-date, and compassionate treatment. I chose this training path to provide the most insightful care possible for my patients. I also speak three languages to serve my patients more effectively: English, Hindi, and Telugu.

Empathetic and compassionate care are an integral part of our practice, and it’s extended not only to our family and friends but to our patients, most of all.

When I’m not seeing my patients, I’m usually at home with my husband and our children or playing tennis. I love listening to music while cooking the delicious Indian dishes my family loves. My husband, Dr. Vinay Saranga, and I savor family time, and promote the significance of family for anyone."

WHY OPEN THE NC INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED NEUROHEALTH?

As Dr. Saranga worked 10 years as a psychiatrist with his patients, he’s been distressed by the
percentage of them who did not respond to traditional antidepressants and anxiolytics. He
researched and scrutinized to find treatments that would bring relief to that segment of his
practice. His determination to find help for these patients eventually led to his opening:
